BC Public Health Emergency:

Does it affect us here in Quesnel?

On Thursday, April 15th 2016, BC’s provincial health officer declared a public health emergency in response to the rise in drug overdoses and deaths. In 2016, 914 people died in BC of drug overdose. This is a 79.2 percent increase over the number of deaths occurring in 2015.

A number of those individuals were from Quesnel. They were someone’s mother, father, sister, brother and child. They were loved and they are deeply missed. This is a preventable tragedy.

Seasons House is trying to find solutions to this epidemic for our community. We have been distributing Naloxone to those who need it most, in partnership with Public Health Nursing, for a number of months. Our staff have been trained to administer Naloxone in the event of an overdose for a number of years and have reversed overdoses and saved lives. Seasons House is also working in partnership with addictions specialists from Cornerstone Dependency Clinic to make sure help is available for anyone who is ready with access to detox, methadone, or suboxone opiate substitution therapy.

If you or someone you know is suffering from addiction and needs help, please give us a call anytime. 250-991-0222. All services are confidential.

Here is how you can help:

  • Educate yourself on addiction and its root causes. Nobody chooses this for their life. Often people who use drugs are ostracized and made to feel ashamed. Reach out to someone who is suffering with addiction. Show kindness and let them know they are not alone.

  • Learn about your local resources and what supports are available. Talk to your local political leaders about the need for investment in addiction supports, detox, and treatment services in our province.

  • Support local organizations who are working with people with addictions. Get involved. Ask about volunteer opportunities and ways you can contribute.
